Our goal is to create a market space for farmers and local producers who value small-scale, sustainable farming and production in order to provide the community with access to fresh, healthy, local food. We strongly encourage environmental and community stewardship, which is reflected in our downtown location, which is easy to access using active transportation or mass transit.
Market location and hours:
For the summer, the market will be located at the old Aliant parking lot, at the corner of Pitt and George, Sydney. Market hours of operation are Saturdays from 1-4 pm.
What makes us different?
- Downtown location
We believe that our downtown location is key to supporting downtown revitalization as well as increasing access to local foods through active transportation.
- Local products
All of our vendors, including the crafters and secondary food producers are strongly encouraged to use local foods or materials in their product.
- Financial sustainability
It is the goal of this market to be financially selfsustaining and not rely on external funds for operation. We strive to keep the cost of the market low, so that our farmers, food vendors, and crafters can gain the most benefit from their labors.
All of our food producers are encouraged to use organic and sustainable methods in the production of their products. All of our craft vendors use natural or recycled/reclaimed materials in their work.
- Environmentally responsible packaging
Vendors are only allowed to use packaging materials that are either recyclable or compostable in the CBRM. We work with our vendors to find suitable alternatives to commonly used products, such as Styrofoam. Styrofoam has been banned for the use of packaging at our market.
- Community involvement
We are actively engaging the community by offering bi‐weekly events at the market, such as our Seedy Saturday seed exchange, and clothing swap.
